Practicum & Target Child

Describe where you are completing your practicum.
Provide a brief description of your target child such as the child's age, gender, and familybackground. Why did you select this child as your target child?

  1. My practicum is taking place in a Head Start/Public preschool. This means it's a Head Start program which is under the guidance and policies of the county Head Start agency; but, it also contracts with the local Supervisory Union having a licensed teacher in each classroom, following a curriculum aligned with the VELs, etc. Eleven children in the class qualify for Head Start. Approximately 8 students do not meet the financial requirements for Head Start and are enrolled as part of our public pre-k program (using local tax dollars).

My target child is in her first year of preschool. She is three. Her brother is actually in his third year of preschool, as he started mid-year through EEE. She does not have any of the issues he had; but, she was concerning to her regular ed. teachers because she didn't seem to recognize her name and she often didn't seem to understand directions, though she is quite verbal when she wants to be. I get the sense that she is non-compliant as part of her personality. She likes to play with me when I'm in the room, so I'm looking forward to using her for this project.

  2. Daryl,

Thanks for the info. I see that you were able to post your comment. I have tried to re-set the blog so that you can continue to post with your regular yahoo email address.
Hopefully, it will allow Lisa and Cindy and you to post comments!

  3. My practicum will be at a the 3 and 4 year old preschool at Blue Mountain Union. This progarm is a success by 6 grant funded program. The 3 year old program is a total of 12 students that have shown a need for the program. The 4 year old prgram is bigger. I am not sure of the exact numbers but that they take all 4 years that apply.

My target child is a 4 year old girl who's mom feels she may be displaying some signs and sympotoms of ADD. Her older sister has ADD.

  4. Daryl and Cindy,

While it is good to have a focus and purpose when you start to observe a target child, remember to keep yourself open to other ideas. If you approach observation with too many preconceived notions, you may find that you'll miss the "forest for the trees".
